This course is about keeping our youth safe on the slopes at club fields & educating them about snow safety awareness. The course is aimed at youth who like to venture onto the more challenging slopes and the goal is to give our youth the skills to understand the terrain they are riding in.
Yep, our annual RiderX will be held this Saturday! The course is shaping up nicely and yes, we might even have a pond skim!

After last seasons hugely successful “Tour de Vino” Master Brewer Mr Dickie Fife is back again on Sat night Sept 10th with a world tour of aqua vitae (“water of life”).
Due to the current warm temperatures we are postponing the RiderX and it will not be held on September 3rd. We'll keep you posted with a new date for this great event.
Conditions are excellent right now with chalky dry snow on the shady aspects and semi spring-like snow on the sunny aspects - just ready after your mid-morning coffee on the deck. We have something for everyone - chopped chalk, packed powder, some moguls, corn, even the odd powder stash for the adventurous.
The Telemark weekend is in full swing and we're looking forward to the Freeheel Weekend.
We're now open for the 2016 winter season! It has been a challenging few weeks of tumultuous weather but the snow has finally arrived. Don't forget our on-mountain accommodation just 15 mins from the slopes. We offer catered DBB and self-catered accommodation, as well as longer-stay ski-accommodation packages which include group lessons.
Alas recent warm weather hasn't been kind to the fantastic base of snow we received back in early June - we're hoping now to open on July 16th. We'll keep you posted!

Due a nasty storm system coming through over the next few days we're postponing the RiderX until the weekend of September 12/13th.
Our first course was so popular we're running a second course this winter - this course will help you improve your backcountry skiing/boarding, travel and avalanche skills.

This week it's our annual Telemark Week and we have an exciting range of events and activities lined up. The Telemark Week is a great opportunity for freeheelers to get together for some skiing and socialising and touch up on technique.
Good snowfall through July and August has left us with exceptional coverage - we've enjoyed some amazing powder days with cold, dry chalky snow prevailing for most of the season so far. Historically, Broken River has held night skiing only in the event of fresh snow, but now, with the help from our new groomer, we're able to consistently offer quality conditions and as such, we're holding night skiing every Friday night, from 7pm. Tram hours on Fridays run as usual during the day, then from 6:30pm-7:30pm and then from 9:30pm-10:30pm. Come on up for some turns under the lights and hang out with us - it's a great vibe and lots of fun!
In support of the Tour de France we're hosting the Tour de Vino this Saturday evening 25th July - so sort out your best cycling lycra outfit and you're in for a fun evening of wine tasting.
We've had 5 snowfalls in the last week bringing us light, dry powder conditions with excellent riding across the whole mountain. What a great start to the 2015 season!

A severe storm swept through yesterday and this morning bringing us an excellent dump of snow. 75 cms fell at the acommodation lodges with greater depths higher up the mountain. This will set us up nicely for our opening next Saturday 27th June.

The Broken River winter team is a small and committed group of highly qualified individuals, working together with a Club full of members who are passionate about Broken River and the great opportunities and atmosphere it offers.
The mix of 18 cm of fresh powder and fun games made for a social and memorable weekend for the kids on Sept 20 and 21st.
It was a gathering of the clan for an epic day of powder skiing on Wednesday 17th September with around 200 people at Broken River for what has to be "THE" day of the season so far.
We've had 42 cm of new snow overnight and today, with deeper pockets of snow higher on the mountain.
The snow is holding up well and we've still got awesome conditions, with dry packed powder on the shady aspects and spring snow on the sunny faces.
Conditions are great right now, with awesome snow and too many bluebird days in a row to keep count of. The weather has been very settled. We're enjoying amazing cold dry conditions on the shadier aspects of the ski area, with a light sun crust on the sunny aspects softening up to provide beautiful late morning and afternoon skiing mountain-wide. The consistent cold temps are keeping the snow chalky and delicious.
We've had some stunning bluebird days this week with excellent packed powder skiing - it's great to be finally open.
Great news - we've had 18cms of snow since yesterday morning and we're aiming to open later in the week! We're aiming to open on Saturday, or possibly Friday.
We've had two good snowfalls this last week and just need another decent dump of snow to open. Finger crossed the weather system early next week will bring us that snow.

Do your homework before going backcountry with our two Mountain Safety Council avalanche courses and learn from two experts in the snow business - Anna Keeling and Irene Henninger.
With the arrival of our Pistenbully 300 W groomer we're looking forward to groomed runs this winter and better snow conditions on days when the snow is less than ideal. This will also give our learners and newcomers a more enjoyable and safer experience at Broken River, & create better teaching conditions for our instructors. Don't worry we're not turning BR into a corrugated paradise - there will still be plenty of off-piste areas to keep the all-mountain die-hards happy.
It was a work party with a difference this weekend as Club member and Master Brewer Dicky Fife and fellow Club member Gerard Donaldson began creating the 2014 craft-brewed Broken River Lager. Even at this early stage the beer is tasting GOOD. Can't wait to enjoy it this winter whilst soaking in the rays on Palmer Lodge deck!

Local BBQ masterchefs will gather on Saturday September 28th to test their culinary skills in our spring gastronomic event - the Broken River BBQ Bake Off.
We have great conditions now with some excellent powder and spring corn snow. The dust and snow have settled after a few exciting days last week. The mother-of-all norwesters blew in last Tuesday and there were some anxious hours up at Broken River while the heavens opened and the streams rose. The snow pack was survived (phew!) and then two top-ups (around 17 cm) brought fresh powder. Incredibly, the coverage looks better than it did before all the rain.

We've had more than 30 cms of powder in the last 5 days and conditions could not get much better than this! 10cms on late Saturday 6th July made for creamy powder conditions on Sunday 7th July. It was definitely a "you should have been there" day and we've had a few more of those since with a couple more falls of fresh powder. Smiles all around. What a great start to the season.
Fantastic conditions with fresh powder snow and bluebird weather made for a stunning start to the 2013 winter season. Around 280 people came up on opening day, Saturday June 29th to make the most of the untracked light powder snow. Conditions were also excellent on Sunday with packed powder runs down the Main Tow.

Last weeks storm has given us excellent coverage for the start of the season and we're all geared up to open on Saturday 29th.
We've had 70 cms of new snow since the storm hit yesterday and it is still dumping! The forecasts suggest that it'll be snowing through until Saturday.
On 10th June 2013 we celebrated 60 years since the first tow - the Rugby Tow - ran at Broken River. The story behind getting the tow to the field is a classic "can do" story, typical of what went on in the early years of Broken River Ski Club.
The systems are turning up - there's lots of activity, though it's anyone's guess as to what this week will bring. If conditions allow, we'd like to spin the tows this Saturday June 22nd, however, if the snow gods frown upon us, we will have to delay opening. The main Broken River Basin has good snow coverage with great skiing. The snow is smooth and firm on most aspects with sugary surface conditions on slopes near the Main Tow.

Calm, warm and balmy conditions were the “icing on the cake” for the more than 100 Club members that gathered up at Palmer Lodge, in Broken River basin to celebrate 60 years since for the formation of Broken River Ski Club. Saturday February 18th 2012 turned out to be a perfect summers day for such a special occasion and a real bonus considering there has been so much bad weather this summer.

We still have lots of snow - in fact we've had more falls in the last 10 days than we've had all season so we're planning to stay open until Labour weekend (23-25th October) weather/snow and patronage permitting.

Great news - we've had 6 cm of new snow overnight and it's been snowing steadily all morning.
Dry packed powder, blue skies and sheltered weather made for ideal conditions for the inaugural *Broken River Telemark Week* held August 1-5th.
Next weekend (Aug 13-14th) we will host the CHILL Junior Big Mountain Freeride competition. This event is open to riders aged 10 to 16 years with divisions for girls, boys, skiers and snowboarders.
We have excellent conditions this week with packed powder over the whole mountain. Skiing on Sunny Peak in the middle of the day has been fun. The shady faces of Happy Valley and the Rugby Tow have lovely sugary snow.
"Telemark" and "avalanche training" are the focus of the events coming up - after two very successful family weeks. Much fun was hard by all on the family weeks both on the slopes and in the lodges. Read more about this here.

On Saturday 30th July we will host our annual Ski Rogaine event. This is a fun event that is like a treasure hunt on skis. Take part as a team, a family or on your own. It is a bit like orienteering on skis.

What an EPIC start to the season! 1.5 metres (yes metres) of new snow in the last 6 days. The snow gods have been kind to us. We will be opening this coming Saturday July 16th, weather permitting. So come on up!

Improve your backcountry skiing, travel and avalanche skills by enrolling in one of our NZ Mountain Safety Council (MSC) avalanche courses. We are offering two courses that will run several times through the season. This is also a great chance to brush up on your backcountry skiing skills. The better you ski, the more fun you will have in that untracked powder! A one-day off-piste ski clinic is offered as part of the Two Day Avalanche Awareness Course and can also be taken in conjunction with the Four Day Backcountry Avalanche Course.

The summer work parties have been in full swing over the last few months and the main focus has been on improving the area outside the Ticket Office. A team of members have spent many weekends working away completing this project.
